• What do we already know about self-management interventions for young people with type 1 diabetes?

In the first part of the project, we conducted a systematic review to understand what research has already been done, and how previous researchers or clinical teams have designed support programmes for children and young people with Type One diabetes.

  • What should the programme include?

We will hold interviews with different groups of people including; Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes, parents of adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes, and Health Care Professionals. These group discussions will aim to understand attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours, and how factors that might be a barrier to being active can be addressed.

  • Experiences and needs of PE teachers, sports coaches and physical activity providers

Using a mixed methods approach with surveys and interviews we explored the confidence, knowledge, and practices of sports coaches and PE teachers around supporting adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes.

  • Programme co-production

Drawing on what we learn from the earlier stages, we will work with different expertise to develop a programme that aims to support adolescents with type one diabetes to be physically active.

  • Young Persons Advisory Group

We will be working alongside a core group of young people with Type 1 Diabetes who will help ensure the research we do is kept relevant and important for those who it aims to benefit.

  • School and sports club policies

We are looking into the provision of support around physical activity in schools and clubs. Undertsanding existing policies and processes with the aim to idevelop and implement co-developed approaches to suppoting young people with type 1 diabetes be active in schools and sports clubs.
